BEML will invest Rs 360 crore in a new plant at an aerospace SEZ near Bangalore for design and manufacture of aerospace components, while it aims at an ambitious plan of assembling small planes in about a decade. While the PSU’s entry into aerospace is aimed at tapping the emerging defence opportunity through offsets, the move is also part of the company plan to transform into a total transport solutions provider, BEML chairman VRS Natarajan said.
BEML makes mining and construction equipment, rail cars and also plans to manufacture dredgers apart from making aerospace components. ?We are going to use this facility for sheet metal fabrication, precision machining for components and assembling of sub-assemblies,? he said. BEML is exploring global collaborations for manufacturing parts and is also looking at acquiring small companies for its aerospace division, he said.
