After the alleged hacking on a government bank website, banks across the sector are not taking any chances and have begun seeking advice from internet security experts to crosschecks their systems and websites to shield themselves against any such eventualities.
They have also started an aggressive awareness campaign to educate their customers on protecting themselves against hackers.
Last week, the government?s Bank of India was alleged to have been hacked. Officials of the bank said they were yet to confirm the hacking as investigations were still on.
Talking to FE, Bank of India?s general manager (information technology), PA Kalyan Sundar said: ?We have already reported the matter to the authority concerned after the incident?. A thorough checking up of the hardware and the website were, however, in progress, he added.
The banker, did not discuss the details of the alleged hacking though.
Meanwhile ICICI Bank has geared up its awareness campaign for its customers. Giving information about the steps taken by the, Pravir Vohra, group-chief technology officer, ICICI Bank, said various measures were underway to create awareness on?phishing?where details like passwords account numbers get leaked or passed on and safety nets to prevent any fraudulent transaction which includes e-mailing tips.
Vohra said that his cusotmers must be on guard if a page pops up seeking personal information, account numbers etc as ?ICICI Bank does not seek personal account related information in any form.?
Patrik Runald, senior security specialist, F-Secure Security Labs, said that India has also become prone to various malwares, a software that copies personal information without the knowledge of the user.
