Punjab State Electricity Board (PSEB) has signed an agreement with Green Planet Energy Private Ltd to purchase 14 mw of power. The move will encourage private entrepreneurs to set up power plants using new and renewable sources of energy in the state.
Chairman of PSEB, Harinder Singh Brar said the plant would be set up in Talwandi Rai village near Raikot in Ludhiana and would be completed in 13 months. Member of generation G S Sra said the company has already signed five power purchase agreements (PPA) with PSEB, under which the projects are being set up in Manuke Gill, Moga (6 mw), Binjon, Hoshiarpur (10 mw), Deep Singh Wala, Faridkot (9 mw), Ramiana, Faridkot (13 mw) and Bir Pind, Jalandhar (10 mw).
The scheduled date of commissioning of projects is March 2011, however, it is expected that couple of projects would be commissioned before November this year, Sra said. The projects will use biodegradable waste and rice straw as fuel and hence will clean the environment. The problem of burning rice straw in open fields will be solved by using it as fuel for the plants.
