The Bhartiya Janata Party- Shiromani Akali Dal alliance on Tuesday won the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation polls with a clear majority. The BJP-SAD alliance won 21 out of the 26 wards in the Municipal elections. An election office spokesperson said that the BJP won 20 wards, while the Congress managed only 4, while Independent candidate one only one ward. Among the prominent figures who won the elections were BJP Mayor Arun Sood and Congress leader Devinder Singh Babla.
According to reports, the polling percentage in the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation election was recorded to be 59.54%. It has t be reported that this election in the 26 wards of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation could be seen as a litmus test for the ruling BJP and rivals Congress following the announcement of the demonetisation scheme. It was reported that a total of 122 candidates had contested the elections, including 67 independent candidates. The total number of voters was reported to be 5.07,627, which included 2,37,374 women voters.

Both the Congress and BJP had contested in all the 26 wards, while the BSP had put up candidates in 17. It has to be noted that the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation has 36 members, of which 26 have been elected councillors, 9 were nominated councillors and one was a Member of Parliament. In the last House, BJP was reportedly having 15 councillors, Congress had 9 and one was an Independent. The Congress had raised the issue of demonetisation and all its leaders had focussed on speaking about how the drive had been implemented without proper planning and thus had led to poor execution causing the common man to face terrible hardships.
