The indefatigable Amitabh Bachchan, Akshara Haasan and Dhanush starrer ‘Shamitabh’ box office collections failed to take off even though the movie received fairly good reviews from critics (‘The Man’ himself got rave reviews for an outstanding performance), clocking just Rs 17.2 crore at the end of week 1 (12th Thursday).
R Balki’s ‘Shamitabh’ movie was released last week, and also stars Dhanush and newbie Akshara Haasan in leading roles.
The reason behind there being very little returns in terms of collections, is explained by trade analyst Vinod Mirani, who said, “Balki comes up with novel ideas always, but the execution of the film gets messed up”.
“The drawbacks were right from a long-winding script to the execution and editing. Instead of cashing in on the idea, the film tries to cash in on Amitabh Bachchan’s image. There was no curiosity for the film hence it had a weak opening day. It did have a slight improvement on Saturday and Sunday.”

“The film ended its opening weekend with box office collections of around Rs 13 crore, which is not enough to help it recoup its high price,” he said.
Akshaye Rathi, exhibitor and distributor said, “Shamitabh hasn’t performed as expected. I guess this is a very niche film and so it is not appealing to the masses.”
However, the film was released in only 1100 screens pan-India and looking at the size of release it is doing fairly okay, Rathi added.

The near future does not look very either as this is a Valentine’s Day week and romance is in the air and this one does not really have anything for couples. Also, ‘Shamitabh’ is facing fierce opposition from new releases, the Ranbir Kapoor starrer ‘Roy’ and Gurmeet Ram Rahim Insaan’s ‘MSG: The Messenger of God’.
