Chilling footage of a crash involving an alleged Sikh truck driver, presumably of Indian origin, who made an illegal U-turn on the Florida Turnpike last week, has been released. The incident led to a fatal collision, killing three people in the process, while the man responsible was ultimately charges with three counts of vehicular homicide. He has since been identified as Harjinder Singh, who reportedly entered the United States illegally.
According to a state-wide news release by Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV), the Florida Turnpike tragedy took place on August 12. It involved a mini-van and a commercial semi-truck and trailer.
As also confirmed by the visuals circulating on social media, Harjinder Singh recklessly tried to execute a hard left turn across the highway to cross through an “official use only” pass. His thoughtless move not only blocked the oncoming traffic’s path, but also failed to avoid a collision with a black minivan coming towards it. Although the victims’ names haven’t been release yet, their part identities were confirmed in local reports.
The minivan passengers who lost their lives on Tuesday were a Pompano Beach woman (37), a Florida City man (30) and a Miami man (54).
Harjinder Singh: Indian-origin truck driver to be deported after Florida Turnpike tragedy
With the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) assistance, state troopers were able to figure out that the man had come into the US illegally by crossing the Mexico border in 2018.
An ICE detainer was issued in his name through the federal 287 (g) program, which allows state troopers to collaborate with ICE. FLHSMC Executive Director Dave Kerner confirmed, “Harjinder Singh is in custody on state vehicular homicide charges and immigration violations.” He further noted that the Sikh trucker would be no longer “destroy the lives of Floridians and visitors.”
Singh is now facing deportation, as officials affirmed that conclusion of his state charges would result in the strict action, especially since he had been present in the country as an “illegal migrant.”
More confirmations about Singh’s country of origin are yet to be officially revealed. As per the New York Post, Harjinder is expected to serve his sentence in Florida if found guilty of the charges against him. He is likely be deported to his home country after that.
