Migrants who entered the United States using the CBP One app—a Biden-era initiative—have been ordered to leave the country “immediately,” according to a statement released by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) on Monday. The move marks a significant shift in US immigration policy under the Trump administration. Although officials did not specify how many are affected, more than 900,000 migrants entered the US through this process since January 2023.
End of parole for CBP One entrants
Migrants admitted via CBP One were granted two-year temporary stay permits with work authorisation under the presidential parole authority. DHS stated that revoking these permits fulfills a commitment to “secure our borders and protect national security.” Beneficiaries have been instructed to voluntarily self-deport using the rebranded CBP Home app.
Emails spark concern among migrant communities
Emails reviewed by the Associated Press and shared on social media urged recipients to “abandon the United States.” Al Otro Lado, a legal aid group, reported that some of those receiving notices are from Honduras, El Salvador, and Mexico. Many of these individuals now face uncertainty and possible displacement.
Wider crackdown on Biden-era immigration measures
The Trump administration has taken broader steps to reverse Biden’s immigration policies, including ending another parole program for 5,32,000 migrants from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela, effective April 24. Additionally, Trump’s administration has terminated Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for nearly 1.1 million individuals, including Venezuelans and Haitians.
