A heated discussion between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the Oval Office has sent shockwaves across the world, leaving Ukraine in an increasingly dangerous position in its war against Russia. The outcome of the meeting not only impacted crucial mineral deals between the two countries but also raised fresh doubts about the support of the US to Ukraine.
Immediate fallout after the meeting
Following the argument, the White House unexpectedly ended Zelensky’s visit and also cancelled the planned lunch between the delegation. Outside the Cabinet Room, untouched plates were seen packed up as the Ukrainian delegation was asked to leave.
Trump later posted on social media platforms, stating, ‘’Zelensky is not ready for peace. He disrespected the United States of America in its cherished Oval Office. He can come back when he is ready for peace.’’
On the other hand, Zelensky, despite the clash, conveyed his gratitude on social media. ‘’Thank you, America, thank you for your support. Ukraine needs just and long-lasting peace, and we are working exactly for that,’’ he mentioned.
Tense meeting in Oval office
The meeting which initially began to reiterate US-UK relations and to finalize a deal granting the US more access to Ukraine’s rare earth minerals turned out dramatically. Trump was frustrated after the meeting and blamed Zelensky for being ‘’disrespectful’’ and abruptly cancelling the minerals deal’s signing.
‘’You are gambling with World War III, and what you are doing is very disrespectful to this country,’’ Trump scolded Zelensky, hinting at the $180 billion in US aid that was given to Ukraine. He further claimed Zelensky’s deep mistrust of Russian President Vladimir Putin is the reason that is posing as an obstacle in peace efforts. ‘’You see the hatred he has for Putin. That’s very tough for me to make a deal with that kind of hate,’’ Trump stated.
Zelensky in response reverted that Putin had violated deals’’ 25 times’’ and cannot be trusted. Trump, however, rejected these concerns stating that Putin has never broken an agreement with him personally.
Political reactions after the meeting
Trump’s opinion drew immediate criticism from Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer who blamed Trump and Vice President JD Vance of ‘’doing Putin’s dirty work.’’ Meanwhile, European allies worried by the collapse, reinstated their support for Ukraine. EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen hailed Zelensky’s toughness, remarking, ‘’Be strong, be brave, be fearless. You are never alone.’’
As Ukraine fights with Russia, the fallout of this high-profile meeting has raised concerns about the future relationship with the US.
