Peel Regional Police in Canada announced the arrest of three people during a demonstration by the Coalition of Hindus of North America, or CoHNA. The protest was meant to raise concerns over “Khalistani intimidation” and increasing “anti-Hindu” sentiments, especially after a spate of incidents targeted Hindu temples across the country.

According to an official statement released on Monday, the protest began at a place of worship in Brampton but was later moved to multiple locations in Mississauga. The police indicated that investigations into the charges would be handled by the 21 Division and 12 Division Criminal Investigation Bureaus.

Earlier in the day, the police monitored the initial demonstration in Brampton, which eventually transitioned to two different sites in Mississauga. The statement stated that three individuals were arrested for various unlawful activities associated with the protests, ongoing investigations into several incidents.

During the management of the protest, one police officer sustained minor injuries while attempting to maintain order. The protestors later regrouped at the Westwood Mall area and subsequently at Airport Road and Derry Road in Mississauga.

In light of the recent attacks on Hindu temples, Canadian Hindu organizations have called for a “peaceful protest.” Events were scheduled at the Hindu Sabha Temple in Brampton and the Laxmi Narayan Temple in Surrey to voice concerns over the situation.

On Sunday, a consular camp at the Hindu Sabha Temple experienced a “violent disruption” near Toronto, drawing further attention to the issue. The Hindu Canadian Foundation released footage showing the attack, which reportedly targeted women and children.

The Indian High Commission in Canada condemned the violence perpetrated by anti-India groups during the incident at the temple, stating that future events would depend on the security measures implemented by local authorities.

Canadian PM Justin Trudeau also spoke out against the violence at the Hindu Sabha temple, reinforcing the principle of religious freedom. He stated that every Canadian has the right to practice their faith without fear. Trudeau expressed gratitude to the Peel Regional Police for their prompt response in safeguarding the community and launching an investigation into the events.
