Nobel Peace Prize 2025 Announcement Live Updates: The Nobel Peace Prize 2025 has been announced and it has been awarded to Venezuela’s Maria Corina Machado. This comes as a heartbreak for US President Donald Trump, who has been claiming to have ended seven wars and backed by Israel PM Benjamin Netanyahu as well as Russia for Nobel peace prize candidature.
The winner was announced at 2:30 pm IST in Oslo, Norway.
This year, the Norwegian Nobel Committee received a total of 338 nominations, which consisted of 244 individuals and 94 organisations, all competing for one of the most prestigious awards in the world.
Who Decides the Winner?
The Norwegian Nobel Committee is made up of 5 members, all appointed by Norway’s 169-member parliament, the Storting. The members include human rights advocate Jorgen Watne Frydnes, foreign policy expert Asle Toje, former acting Prime Minister Anne Enger, ex-Minister of Education Kristin Clemet, and former Foreign Affairs Secretary Gry Larsen. Together, they review nominations and select the winner each year.
Could Trump have really won a Nobel prize?
Experts, including Nina Graeger, director of the Peace Research Institute Oslo, have said that if Trump were able to pressure Russia to end the war in Ukraine or Israel to halt its conflict in Gaza, he could be considered a serious contender for the Nobel Peace Prize, Sky News reported.
Now that an agreement has reached between Hamas and Israel before the Nobel announcement, it could become a possibility. According to Alfred Nobel’s will, the prize is meant for them “who have done the most or best to advance fellowship among nations”.
What will the winner get?
The Nobel Peace Prize comes with a medal designed by Norwegian sculptor Gustav Vigeland, featuring Alfred Nobel. In addition, the winner will receive a cash prize of 11 million Swedish crowns.
