An air raid alert sounded over Tel Aviv on Wednesday as US Secretary of State Antony Blinken was nearing the end of his visit to the city. Smoke was seen rising from intercepted projectiles near Blinken’s hotel, according to the Associated Press. The Israeli military confirmed that two projectiles were launched from Lebanon but were successfully intercepted, with no casualties reported. Blinken is set to continue his diplomatic mission, with Saudi Arabia as his next stop.

Blinken Urges for Lasting Peace

During his visit, Blinken stressed that Israel should aim for “enduring strategic success” following its military actions against Hamas. He urged the Israeli government to find a lasting solution to the crisis and secure the release of hostages held by the militant group. Both sides remain resolute in their positions. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has pledged to destroy Hamas and free the hostages, while Hamas demands a lasting cease-fire, the release of Palestinian prisoners, and a full Israeli withdrawal from Gaza.

Mass Displacement in Gaza

Since the war began on October 7, 2023, approximately 1,200 people have been killed, and 250 abducted by Hamas militants during their incursion into Israel. In response, Israel’s military offensive has led to the deaths of over 42,000 Palestinians, according to local authorities. The United Nations warns that Gaza’s economy could take 350 years to recover from the widespread destruction. With vast areas damaged, about 90% of Gaza’s 2.3 million residents have been displaced, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in the region.
