Intensifying cross-border hostilities have led to a new wave of Israeli airstrikes in northeastern Lebanon and Gaza, killing at least 52 people in Lebanon and wounding scores more, according to the Lebanese Health Ministry. Central Gaza was also hit, with Palestinian hospital officials reporting the retrieval of 25 bodies following a barrage of Israeli aerial attacks that began Thursday.

In northeastern Lebanon’s Bekaa Valley, areas known for their agricultural landscapes and relative tranquility were heavily bombarded on Friday, reportedly causing significant civilian casualties and mass displacement. Lebanese authorities said that approximately 60,000 residents fled the region surrounding Baalbek after evacuation warnings, and entire villages emptied as families sought safety.

This latest escalation coincides with diplomatic efforts by the Biden administration, which is pushing for temporary cease-fire agreements days before the upcoming US presidential election. President Biden’s team is urging for a pause to alleviate the rising civilian toll and address humanitarian needs in the conflict zones.

Meanwhile, Israel has widened its strikes in Lebanon, extending beyond southern border areas to urban centers like Baalbek, a city of 80,000 people. Originally targeting smaller villages where Hezbollah operates, Israeli airstrikes are now impacting broader swathes of the country, with Lebanon’s government reporting mounting casualties and critical infrastructure damage.

In Israel, emergency services confirmed seven injuries early Saturday following projectiles launched from Lebanon into the Israeli town of Tira. The Magen David Adom service reported that two people sustained moderate injuries, with others sustaining less severe wounds.
