Israel launched more airstrikes on Lebanon on Wednesday while Hezbollah targeted Israel’s Mossad headquarters and fired rockets into northern Israel, marking the heaviest exchange of fire between the adversaries in a year, reports the Associated Press.
An Israeli military spokesperson confirmed that Israel’s defence system intercepted a surface-to-surface missile from Lebanon as it approached Tel Aviv, though Hezbollah’s intended target remains unclear. While warning sirens sounded in Tel Aviv and nearby areas, no casualties or damage were reported.
Hezbollah claimed responsibility for the missile attack, stating it was in retaliation for Israel’s actions in Gaza and recent operations that allegedly involved Mossad. Israel, however, has not confirmed its involvement in these incidents.
This exchange of fire follows increasing Israeli airstrikes targeting Hezbollah positions, as well as Hezbollah’s retaliatory rocket fire into northern Israel. Tensions have surged since the conflict between Israel and Hamas erupted last October, with Hezbollah expressing solidarity with Hamas.
Israel’s offensive has claimed hundreds of lives in Lebanon, displaced thousands, and expanded into previously untouched regions. Despite international concerns, Israel’s military campaign continues, with US support remaining steadfast amid growing calls for de-escalation.
Hezbollah, backed by Iran, remains resilient despite Israel’s efforts to weaken its infrastructure, while Israeli troops continue preparations for a potential ground operation in Lebanon to secure Israel’s northern border.
Meanwhile, the UN Security Council announced plans to convene on Wednesday to address the escalating conflict in the region. “Lebanon is on the edge. The people of Lebanon, the people of Israel, and the international community cannot allow Lebanon to become another Gaza,” U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned.
Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant stated that Hezbollah had been significantly weakened by recent strikes and that operations would persist. “Hezbollah has endured a series of heavy blows to its leadership, its fighters, and its operational capabilities. These are critical setbacks,” Gallant told Israeli forces.
