An Indian international student studying in the United States is seeking help after losing his passport and not returning home for nearly three years. The student, who arrived in the US in August 2022 for undergraduate studies, revealed in an online post that he discovered his passport was missing in January 2025 but has yet to file a police report.
The student, now preparing to enter his senior year in August 2025, expressed concerns about how the lost passport might impact his travel plans, visa status, and future opportunities. He has not returned to India since his arrival, stating that he wanted to “stay in the USA and enjoy for a while.”
With graduation on the horizon in May 2026, the student is contemplating whether to travel back to India now for passport and visa renewal or wait until after graduation during Optional Practical Training (OPT), a post-study work period granted to international students.
He also floated the idea of taking a break in the upcoming fall semester, postponing graduation to December 2026 to allow time for summer internships, which he has yet to secure. However, the uncertainty surrounding the US immigration climate—particularly under a potential second Trump presidency—has added to his stress.
“I’m missing my family and I’m just very worried about the whole Trump immigration situation,” he wrote. “Is it better to go now or later?”
One Reddit user said, “First things first — reach out to the Indian embassy and email them about your situation. Also, contact your college DSO (Designated School Official) immediately and file a police report for the lost passport.
With their guidance, apply for a new passport as soon as possible. Without a passport, you won’t be able to travel to India or make decisions about delaying graduation or taking a semester break. Time is of the essence here.
Regarding the semester break — Reddit isn’t the right forum for that decision. Speak directly with your DSO and academic counselors. To my knowledge, international students on F-1 visas can’t take a semester off at will. It’s only allowed under exceptional circumstances and involves multiple conditions.
As for internships, you might still be able to secure one for the summer and register it as a zero-credit internship depending on your college’s policy.
But above all — get your passport issue resolved first. I hope you have some form
