In the 1970s, Sylvester Stallone faced extreme poverty. With just $100 to his name, he reached his lowest point when he had to sell his beloved dog for $25 outside a liquor store because he could no longer afford to feed it. The heartbreaking moment left him in tears, marking a turning point in his life.
Birth of ‘Rocky’
Shortly after, Stallone found inspiration in a boxing match between Muhammad Ali and Chuck Wepner. Driven by determination, he wrote the screenplay for Rocky in just 20 hours. Despite receiving offers as high as $350,000, Stallone refused to sell the script unless he was cast in the lead role. Producers were hesitant, citing his unconventional appearance and speech. Eventually, Stallone accepted $35,000 and secured his role as Rocky Balboa.
Reclaiming his best friend
With his first earnings, Stallone set out to buy back his dog. He waited outside the liquor store for three days. The man who bought the dog initially refused to sell it back, even when offered $1,000. Eventually, Stallone paid a staggering $15,000 to be reunited with his loyal companion.
Rocky became a massive success, winning Oscars for Best Picture, Best Directing, and Best Film Editing. Stallone himself was nominated for Best Actor. The film’s triumph catapulted him into Hollywood stardom.
