An Indian man was hospitalised with severe injuries in Ireland this week — mere days after arriving in the country. The incident has since been dubbed a “mindless, racist” attack with both locals and Indian officials calling for the perpetrators to be brought to justice. YouTuber Daksh Sharma also joined the discussion on Thursday — insisting in a social media post that the small island nation had become “unsafe” in recent years.

‘Ireland isn’t safe’

“Can’t believe I’m saying this, but Ireland isn’t safe. Can’t wait to go back home. Always thought it was such an amazing country when I got here 3 years ago, made some amazing friends with the locals here, but this place is going to the dogs,” Daksh wrote on X.

He cited the recent attack to underscore his point and noted that many had gotten busy slandering the victim or justifying the attack. He added that a growing number of people were also blaming immigrants and “telling them to go back” in recent days.

“I would’ve told people earlier to come here and live. The quality of life is amazing, the people are usually the kindest. Please try your hand at Germany/UK instead. Better yet, the US if you’re seeking work/study abroad. This place is about to implode. The racists are a small minority but now they’re dangerous as well,” he added.

What is the case?

An Indian man was reportedly stabbed, stripped naked, and abandoned on the streets of Dublin after being attacked by a mob. Local resident Jennifer Murray had spotted the man — said to be an Amazon employee — “surrounded by a crowd of about 30 people” while driving past. She recounted the incident in a Facebook video, explaining that the Indian national was covered in blood as he pleaded for her help.

“They stripped him of his clothes, took his shoes, underwear, trousers and his wallet and phone and left him on the road. They could have killed him,” she added.

Murray told Irish newspaper The Journal that the incident was “pure racism” and insisted that the man was completely innocent. The ‘Irish Independent’ newspaper reported that the Fine Gael party Councillor for Tallaght South, Baby Pereppadan, met with the man on Monday and said he remains in “shock”.

“He couldn’t speak much because of the shock he was in, he only arrived in Ireland three weeks ago. He is not taking any visitors at the moment. I am calling for more Garda (police) presence in the area. Small incidents like these are happening frequently in Tallaght. People need to understand that many Indian people moving to Ireland are here on work permits, to study and work in the healthcare sector or in IT and so on, providing critical skills,” Pereppadan told the newspaper.

Locals also announced a community standout following the incident — calling it a “vicious racist attack”.

“The man was walking through Kilnamanagh when he was set upon by a gang of youths. The man was stabbed, beaten and stripped. False accusations about the man were later spread on social media in an attempt to justify the attack. Racists and far-right groups have stoked the fire against immigrants for months and this has fueled racism across Dublin city. Our local community will be taking a stand against this attack,” the community wrote on Facebook.

“Regarding the recent incident of physical attack on an Indian national happened in Tallaght, Dublin, Embassy is in touch with the victim and his family. All the requisite assistances are being offered. Embassy is also in touch with the relevant Irish authorities in this regard,” the Indian Embassy in Dublin wrote on X earlier this week.
