Microsoft laid off nearly 6000 employees last week amid a continued pivot towards artificial intelligence — its largest round of layoffs since the elimination of 10,000 roles in 2023. But as thousands scrambled to reassemble their lives, others were already applying for new roles with Microsoft. A former employee was left fuming this week after coming across a hiring post ere days after losing their job in the company.
“This is why I hate Linkedin. I hate the cringe I feel so sorry for you but I’m going to use your misfortune to get some likes, but this post is almost sociopathic. Have some REAL empathy. Is it that hard to ask?” fumed the former employee.
The post was shared anonymously on the Team Blind website and soon went viral — with many noting that it was unfortunately “business as usual” for companies despite the layoffs. The LinkedIn update was shared by a hiring manager and advertised an “exciting opportunity” on the strategy team for potential applicants.
“It hurts but it’s that person’s job to hire for their team. Time and money moves forward while we are left to pick of the pieces of our lives and careers. You can either lash out when you see it (unwise), protect yourself from viewing things by unfollowing Microsoft as a company, or separate yourself from your corporate identity and understand that companies are not people and therefore unable to have empathy. You have to depersonalize them if you want to stay sane,” read one comment.
