T20 World Cup 2024 will be one of the first exemplary cricket tournaments where the initiatives of ICC over the recent past to globalise cricket as a sport and to take it across different continents. For the first time, the main pool of the T20 World Cup will host 20 teams from different continents. Other than hosts taking two seats, i.e., West Indies and the United States, the remaining 18 slots have been divided for teams according to different criteria they satisfy to qualify for the mega tournament.
Format of the T20 World Cup 2024
The 20 teams will be divided into 4 groups of five teams each. The top two teams from each group will qualify for the Super 8s. These teams will further be grouped into two groups of four teams each, from which the two teams each will play semi-finals.
Qualifying criteria for T20 World Cup 2024
Other than the two hosts, eight spots are reserved for the eight best performers of the T20 World Cup 2022, while the next two spots are reserved based on rankings as of November 14. So far, the twelve nations to qualify from the above categories include Australia, England, Pakistan, India, Netherlands, New Zealand, South Africa, and Sri Lanka. The nations to qualify based on rankings include Afghanistan and Bangladesh.
The remaining of the eight seats are reserved for the qualifiers from the different regions. 2 teams each from Africa, Asia and Europe, while one team each from the Americas and East Asia-Pacific region is destined to play at the grand stage.
Regional Qualifiers
So far, Ireland and Scotland have qualified from Europe, followed by Nepal and Oman from Asia. Papua New Guinea has qualified from the East Asia-Pacific region, while Canada has qualified from the Americas. Out of the two seats from Africa, Namibia have sealed their seat, while Uganda and Kenya are the top contenders for the remaining one slot.
