The Holkar Stadium in Indore is typically a place of celebration for Indian cricket, but on Sunday night, it became the site of a rare and uncomfortable confrontation with fans vocally experiencing their criticism of India head coach Gautam Gambhir.

Following India’s 1-2 ODI series defeat to New Zealand, their first-ever home series loss to the Kiwis, the frustration in the stands boiled over into a targeted protest against Gambhir.

Viral video: Fans in Indore chant Gambhir “Haye Haye”

As the post-match presentation began, a section of the Indore crowd began chanting “Gambhir haaye haaye” (Down with Gambhir), directed at Head Coach Gautam Gambhir.

The chants came on the heels of another disappointing home result, adding to the scrutiny surrounding Gambhir’s tenure.

Virat Kohli’s reaction to chants targeted at Gambhir

The moment that has since taken social media by storm isn’t just the noise, but the reaction from the players on the field. Virat Kohli, standing just yards away from the coaching staff, was caught on camera with a look of pure disbelief.

While some viral clips have attempted to lip-read his response, the footage clearly shows Kohli visibly taken aback, gesturing toward the stands in a “what are you doing?” manner as if to shield the dugout from the verbal onslaught.

India vs New Zealand: The weight of a 37-year record

The hostility in the stands was fuelled by the historical weight of the defeat. New Zealand’s 2-1 series victory is their first ODI series win on Indian soil in 37 years.

Coming after a 3-0 Test whitewash last year, the loss has turned the spotlight firmly on Gambhir, who was seen with a dejected expression alongside players like Shreyas Iyer, Ravindra Jadeja, and KL Rahul.

Despite the chaos, Kohli remained the sole bright spot for India, smashing a masterful 124 off 108 balls in the decider, his 54th ODI century.

However, his individual brilliance couldn’t mask the collective failure that led to the crowd’s outburst.

No room for error for India’s leadership: India vs New Zealand T20Is loom

With the T20 World Cup less than three weeks away, the Indian team has zero time to process the Indore incident. The focus shifts immediately to Nagpur for the five-match T20I series against New Zealand, starting Wednesday.

Captain Suryakumar Yadav now faces the daunting task of leading a bruised squad into a “dress rehearsal” where the stakes have suddenly become much higher.

For Gambhir and the selection committee, the T20 series is a necessary attempt to reclaim the narrative before the global tournament begins on February 7.
