The Indian cricket team is all set to begin its ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 cycle with a high-stakes five-match Test series against England, starting 20 June at Headingley in Leeds. This marks a new era for Team India, as they head into the series without veterans Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, both of whom retired from Tests earlier this year.
Taking over the leadership mantle is 25-year-old Shubman Gill, who will captain the side for the first time in Test cricket. Under the coaching guidance of Gautam Gambhir, Gill now shoulders the responsibility of guiding India to their first Test series win in England since 2007 — and only the fourth ever on English soil. The three previous series wins came in 1971, 1986, and 2007.
The series will be a litmus test for the young Indian side, but as fans remember from the historic win at the Gabba in 2021, a youthful squad can defy the odds and rise to the occasion. With stars like Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Rishabh Pant, and Ravindra Jadeja returning, and new faces like Sai Sudharsan and Harshit Rana stepping up, India will be aiming for a strong start to their WTC campaign.
