India vs England Test Cricket: Former India captain Sourav Ganguly praise Shubman Gill after the young skipper’s breathtaking 269 in the second Test against England at Edgbaston. Taking to X, Ganguly called the innings “an absolute masterclass,” noting that Gill’s transition to the No.4 spot has been transformative.
“Just flawless. One of the best innings I have seen in England in any era,” wrote Ganguly. He added, “So much improvement in the last few months. Probably opening was not his place in Test cricket.”
Gill finding his place at No.4
Gill, who started his career as an opener, has now stepped into the No.4 role, one of the most prestigious slots in Indian cricket history, previously held by legends like Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli. His marathon double century not only helped India amass a dominant 587 but also established his credentials as a long-term solution in the middle order. After play, Gill credited his preparation: “This is the result of work I put in before the series. I’m glad it’s paying off.”

Gill breaking records
At just 25 and in his 34th Test, Gill broke multiple records with his 269. He became the first Indian and Asian Test captain to score a double century in England. His knock surpassed Virat Kohli’s 254* as the highest score by an Indian Test captain, and eclipsed Sachin Tendulkar’s 241* as the highest score by an Indian outside Asia. Gill also went past Sunil Gavaskar’s 221 at The Oval, now holding the record for the highest Test score by an Indian in England.
Day 2 ended with England reeling at 77 for 3, trailing by 510 runs, as India took complete control of the match. But beyond the scoreline, it was Shubman Gill’s epic that signalled a potential generational shift in Indian cricket, a new prince stepping fully into the shoes of past kings.
