MS Dhoni of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) has demonstrated a commitment to adapting to the dynamic nature of contemporary cricket. While retiring from international competition in 2019, Dhoni has maintained a prominent presence in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Each successive IPL season over the past five years has prompted speculation regarding his continued participation. Nonetheless, his consistent performance and notable physical condition at 43 have garnered widespread acclaim.
Dismisses strategist role in CSK
Dhoni dismissed claims that he’s the behind-the-scenes strategist at CSK, despite relinquishing captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad. Instead, he highlights his focus on reinventing his game to remain competitive in the IPL.
“I am no different, I have to adapt as well. This is what is required of me for where I am batting. You have to try and stay relevant,” MS Dhoni added. “The way we played T20 in 2008 and the way we played IPL last year, it’s very different.
“Modern batsmen are more aggressive, utilising conventional shots for big hits and incorporating innovative techniques like reverse scoops and sweeps against fast bowlers,” Dhoni explained to JioStar after CSK’s victory over Mumbai Indians. “I must also evolve. The demands of my batting position necessitate adaptation.” He further noted the significant shift in T20 cricket since 2008, and even since last year, with more batting friendly wickets.
Dhoni’s leadership role in CSK
Addressing rumors about his influence on CSK’s decision-making, Dhoni clarified that while he engages in discussions with Gaikwad, he avoids dictating strategy. “Ruturaj’s long tenure with us and his calm, composed demeanor made him an ideal leader,” Dhoni stated.
“I told him before the tournament that my advice was not mandatory. Despite speculation, he made the vast majority of key decisions—bowling changes, field placements, and so on. My role was to offer support. He effectively managed the team,” Dhoni concluded.
