Amid news of Gautam Gambhir’s appointment as India head coach being a ‘done deal’, there’s a new twist in the tale. Reports so far had said that Gambhir was the sole candidate that was in the fray and the BCCI will be announcing Rahul Dravid’s successor by the end of June. However, a News 18 report claims that the BCCI also interviewed another candidate and was ‘impressed’ by Gambhir’s rival. So, who is the person in question? Well, the News 18 report says that it is WV Raman, former Indian cricketer. he made detailed presentation, which was liked by the BCCI panel.
BCCI’s Cricket Advisory Committee that is interviewing the head coach candidates comprise of Sulakshana Naik, Ashok Malhotra and Jatin Paranjape. Reports said that Gambhir was interviewed virtually. The report also said that the BCCI’s CAC may interview an overseas candidate tomorrow.
If an overseas star is indeed being interviewed for the head coach position, it will be intriguing to see who it is. Previously, Delhi Capitals coach Ricky Ponting mentioned being ‘approached.’
“…there were a few little one-on-one conversations during the IPL, just to gauge my interest in the role,” Ponting told the ICC. “I’d love to be a senior coach of a national team, but with my other commitments and wanting some time at home…everyone knows that taking a job with the Indian team means you can’t be involved with an IPL team, so that would also be a factor.”
