Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) stalwart Dinesh Karthik concluded his Indian Premier League (IPL) career with a defeat in the Eliminator match against Rajasthan Royals (RR) on Wednesday (May 22). Karthik, who had hinted earlier that this IPL season would be his last, received a guard of honour from his teammates after the match in Ahmedabad. 

While Karthik did not personally announce his retirement, the league’s broadcaster confirmed the news via social media following the game. Having debuted in the T20 league 16 years ago, Karthik is celebrated as one of the finest finishers in this format.

Jio Cinema, IPL’s digital broadcaster, paid tribute to the RCB wicket-keeper batter on social media, acknowledging his remarkable career, which includes one IPL title.

After the match, Karthik removed his gloves and acknowledged the fans, as RCB players circled the stadium to thank the spectators for their support. A heartfelt moment unfolded when Virat Kohli embraced Karthik, who appeared to be holding back his emotions. As Karthik made his way back to the dressing room, he was given a guard of honour by his RCB teammates.

Dinesh Karthik’s IPL career 

Karthik ends his IPL career with an impressive 4,842 runs in 257 matches, including 22 fifties. Over his 17-year IPL career, he played for six franchises: Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals), Punjab Kings, Mumbai Indians, Gujarat Lions, Kolkata Knight Riders, and RCB. In the ongoing season, Karthik scored 326 runs in 15 matches, with an average of 36.22 and a striking rate of 187.36.
