Ahead of the IPL 2025 mega-auction, BCCI secretary Jay Shah announced a significant increase in match fees for players. Starting next year, every IPL cricketer will receive Rs 7.5 lakh per match, potentially earning up to Rs 1.05 crore if they play in all league matches during the season. This means franchises will now compensate players for their appearances in addition to their contract amounts.
Shah also revealed that each franchise will allocate Rs 12.60 crore (approximately USD 1 million) for match fees throughout the IPL season, effective from 2025.
“In a historic move to celebrate consistency and champion outstanding performances in the #IPL, we are thrilled to introduce a match fee of INR 7.5 lakhs per game for our cricketers! A cricketer playing all league matches in a season will get Rs. 1.05 crores in addition to his contracted amount. Each franchise will allocate INR 12.60 crores as match fees for the season! This is a new era for the #IPL and our players!” Jay Shah wrote on X.
IPL 2025 player retention rule
Franchises can now retain up to six players, with the Right to Match (RTM) option reinstated, and the Impact Player rule will continue. For the upcoming mega auction, the auction purse has been increased to Rs 120 crore (approximately USD 14.33 million), which is Rs 20 crore more than the previous year.
Franchises can retain up to six players, with at least one being an uncapped Indian player. The remaining five can be either Indian or overseas players. Retention can occur through direct retention, a combination of retention and Right to Match (RTM), or solely through RTM.
For franchises retaining five players, the deductions from their auction purse will be as follows: Rs 18 crore for the first retention, Rs 14 crore for the second, Rs 11 crore for the third, and Rs 18 crore and Rs 14 crore for the fourth and fifth, respectively. This totals Rs 75 crore deducted from the overall purse of Rs 120 crore.
The amount for uncapped players remains at Rs 4 crore, similar to the 2021 mega auction. Thus, if a franchise retains six players, they will have Rs 79 crore deducted, leaving them with Rs 41 crore available for the auction.
