After US President Donald Trump announced a 90-day tariff pause earlier this week, it has stirred global markets into a mayhem. Indian External Affairs Minister, S Jaishankar said that the Trump administration has been quick in responding to the bilateral trade agreement. He revealed at the Global Technology Summit that New Delhi is geared up for a “very high” degree of urgency in trade deals with the US, European Union and UK.
While interacting at the summit he stated that the “US under President Donald Trump has fundamentally changed” with regards to its perspective on global trade. Acknowledging the global consequences across key industries, Trump’s tariffs have hinted at a global economic recession.
As tariffs disrupted global trade and economy, the EAM also spoke about the US-China trade war and constant battle of rising tariffs between the global powers. After China was excluded from the 90-day pause with increased tariffs of more than 140%, the tech-giant responded with a retaliatory 125% tariff rate. On the other hand, India is still negotiating a bilateral trade agreement (BTA) with the Trump administration to settle the tariff issue.

He also commented on India’s readiness, “This time, we are certainly geared up for high degree of urgency. I mean, we see a window here. Out trade team are charged up.” This statement also shows how Indian negotiators are “on top of their game” and very ambitious to achieve their way in an attempt to turn out the trade deals with US, UK and EU.
With the upcoming visit of US Vice-President JD Vance in India, Jai Shankar’s statement, “Nothing is just about trade anymore. Nothing is purely business. Everything has become personal” puts the BTA into perspective.
