Dishoom review: The ingredients for a mass seller are very much there. India-Pakistan cricket is masala enough, add a kidnapping of an ace Indian cricketer and the effect can be spectacular. Dishoom cast is capable enough to carry it off, what with John Abraham, Varun Dhawan and Jacqueline Fernandez in the mix with action and uncertainty thrown in in equal measure to wow the audience. But did it do justice to the movie, is the plot deep enough, interesting enough to keep viewers engrossed? (Image: Bollywood Hungama) -
Things cricket are already in the front-row of the Indian male's mindset with Virat Kohli and co making a winning start against the West Indies in the Test series. The setting for the movie has already been laid as the interest in cricket is sky high. (Image: Bollywood Hungama)

After the crime has been committed, the Indian authorities wake up to an emergency and they trot out the best cop in the business and jet him down to teh Middle-East – the setting of the match. He gets a sidekick who is a non-performing asset and in this team gets invited a petty thief in the form of Jacqueline. As they go about their business to save the cricketer, ensure India-Pakistan relations don't get any worse and provide a happy ending to the public at large, a lot of energy is expanded, people are beaten up, brotherly love is bandied about. There is a huge urgency attached to the case as the India-Pakistan tie is scheduled to start within 36 hours and humiliation needs to be avoided at all costs. Oh yes, one more thing, did we tell you that this is an action comedy! Well, yes it is! So, you get 2 bangs for the buck! (Image: Bollywood Hungama)

Providing this kick are some good performances from the lead actors. The thrills derived keep you on the edge of the seat even as you break out in laughter from the wisecracks. Dishoom script is by Rohit Dhawan and Tushar Hiranandani is extraordinary in parts, but drifts into predictability on occasions. What keeps the film going apace is the incredible bonding and synchronised behaviour of the actors. While the action sequences thrill, the jokes will keep the audiences in splits – mostly. The direction is tight, justifying the grand effect that the movie displays. And even though the film lags in the second half, it is not long before the entertainment and the action sequences pick up pace. It is entertaining stuff. (Image: Bollywood Hungama)
Both John Abraham and Varun Dhawan carry off the film superbly. John Abraham, after many false starts to his career where he wants to play the tough guy, gets it all sorted out in Dishoom and his 'jugalbandi' with the spectacular Varun Dhawan. It is guaranteed to bring many people to their feet. Varun has already a number of serious films under his belt and Dishoom will add comedy to that as one of the many things he excels at – his timing, face-play and execution of the comic parts are worth watching again and again The man is well on the way to stardom. Another good performance in the film is surprisingly by Jacqueline Fernandez. While she is supposed to be eye candy in Dishoom, sort of a side dish, she nevertheless manages to carry off her role very well without messing up in any way. Does not look artificial or stone-faced, something that she has been accused of doing. Another surprise is by Akshaye Khanna who manages to outdo himself and all his previous roles with his outing. He makes his performance stand out with his presence and his dialogues, the delivery of which was was made in a rivetting manner. (Image: Bollywood Hungama)

And did we talk about Akshay Kumar? No? Well the superstar is very much there but in a cameo role – as a gay man! Needless to say, being the exceptional actor he is, Akshay is charming and watching him go through the repertoire of acting styles again shows why this man keeps generating Rs 100 cr movies time after time. And there is more, much, much more. Both Nargis Fakhri, and Parineeti Chopra make their appearances, and for the cricket aficionados former cricket legends are duly paraded including Paksitan's Javed Miandad and India's Mohinder Amarnath and Atul Wasan. Definitely an entertainer that will appeal to the young ones especially! (Image: Bollywood Hungama)
