For instance, It was clear right from Sultan release day it will beat Aamir Khan's Dhoom 3. While in between it had a scare where it seemed Sultan may not be able to do so, yet over the last weekend, Salman Khan power boosted it ahead of its rival movie for the No . 3 position. Now, in the All Time Highest Grossers list, at Rs 284 crore, Dhoom 3 has been outmuscled to the 4th spot and at Rs 289.05 crore, Salman Khan has taken over the 3rd with Sultan. (Express Photo)

Dig into this now. The tale of Sultan is simple and positive – a message that Salman Khan has made his own signature style. The message is in the medium and what Salman Khan wants to provide is a positive takeaway. A hard working, honest-to-goodness boy who never gives up on the goal he wants to achieve. Aamir Khan has been critics' darling for a long time now. He always gets 4 stars or above for almost all his movies. They too carry a message, but the message may not always be clear and it can have its dark or flippant side. In Dhoom 3 the biker boys, including Abhishek Bachchan carry out improbable feats on their fast bikes, dodge bullets and indulge in other mission imposible, fantasy stuff. They sport huge muscles and their girlfriends are slick. It is dazzling stuff! But a temporrary high only. But hey, we have to keep our feet on the ground, no? So, if you want a shot of fantasyland, Dhoom 3 is your fix. For the rest of the population, Mr Sultan is the kind of staple that builds character, perhaps even nations. The key takeways are positive. While that was all about metaphysics, let us delve a little bit into the world of box office collections, again and see how the masses read it – after all they put their mouths where the money is. Sultan collection from day 1 to day 5 were all above Rs 300 cr with the best being Rs 38.21 cr on Sunday (day 5) and worst being Rs 31.67 cr Friday (day 3) – remember it was supposed to be an Eid release but, the festival was shifted from Wednesday (when the film released) to Thursday depriving Salman of a big chunk of money. Dhoom 3 did well, but not exceedingly so. It managed to get above the Rs 30 cr mark on 3 days with the best of Rs 38 cr on day 3 and the worst of Rs 33 cr on day 2. However, Dhoom 3 did manage to score well over the next three days too, scoring above Rs 20 cr. Its run ended after 21 days at Rs 284.27 cr. The worldwide figure was Rs 435.34 cr. Salman Khan has reached a worldwide figure of Rs 553 cr and it has not run its course in theatres. In India, Sultan earned Rs 289.05 crore. Sunday was its 19th day. (Bollywood Hungama)

You could say that was in 2013 and this is 2016. But the truth is that the marketing landscape has not changed much and the cinema going crowd has not increased or decreased by any large or noticeable manner. With every previous release being history, what will hold for the future? While Salman Khan will bask under the pleasant Sultan glow, and you know he will look to come up with yet another feelgood movie. For Aamir, well, the man is out to outmuscle Salman with a wrestling saga (shades of Sultan?) titled Dangal that will hit ciemas soon. What thereafter, the actor is versatile, what will emerge from his corner is anyone's guess. (Reuters)
