Madaari box office collections: With all eyes on southern superstar Rajinikanth starrer Kabali release, most missed the fact that a Bollywood movie too released on Friday, Irrfan Khan's thriller Madaari. Irrespective of the content of the film or its quality, it was a foregone conclusion that before Thalaivar, Khan had no hope of getting anywhere near double figures in terms of collections. In fact far from it, people were actually taking bets whether Madaari will even reach the Rs 5 crore mark on opening day. (Image: Bollywood Hungama)

While nothing really stood in the way of Irrfan Khan, except of course Salman Khan's Sultan, which is almost at the end of its run in theatres, and Rajinikanth's new release, the truth of the matter is that the southern star's film was releasing only in 1,000 screens in north India and therefore, would not really pose any kind of competition for the same market. After all, the people who would watch Madaari are unlikely to head to a Kabali show, or give up one for the other. The clientele is totally differentiated. Madaari was directed by Nishikant Kamat. So, where does that leave Irrfan Khan in general and Madaari in particular? Well, the actor himself put things in perspective by saying there is no competition with Rajinikanth and that it would take him at least another lifetime to compete on an equal level with the megastar. That said, the expectations of the industry were not that high from Madaari. It has a limited appeal and the box office collections figures were expected to reflect that. (Image: Bollywood Hungama)

As such, we find that Madaari box office collections on opening day were just Rs 4.5 cr – worldwide. Madaari collection was Rs 3.25 crore in India and in the international market it registered a take of Rs 1.2 crore. These figures were revealed by the representatives of the movie in a statement. The film was praised by the critics, but as was clear initially, it did not really have mass appeal that comes courtesy of the presence of superstars. (Image: Bollywood Hungama)

Madaari is a story about the kidnapping of a Home Minister's son and thereafter, instead of a ransom, the kidnapper makes a very strange demand. As the film races from one high-octane moment to the next, many surprising revelations come up. The cast of Madaari includes, aside from Irrfan Khan, Jimmy Shergill, Vishesh Bansal, Tushar Dalvi, Nitish Pandey and Ayesha Raza. (Image: Bollywood Hungama)
