Images taken by a new European satellite show the levels and distribution of air pollutants around the world, including ash spewing from a volcano in Indonesia. The European Space Agency released images made by its Sentinel-5P satellite that show high concentrations of nitrogen dioxide in parts of Europe on November 22. Nitrogen dioxide is mainly caused by vehicle emissions and in industrial processes. Another image shows high levels of carbon monoxide, commonly produce by fires, in Asia, Africa and South America. A series of images also show sulfur dioxide, ash and smoke from the Mount Agung volcano in Bali last month. Sentinel-5P, launched October 13, can map levels of nitrogen dioxide, methane, carbon monoxide and other pollutants that can be hazardous to human health or contribute to global warming. Let us take a look at the images:

The petroleum coke being burned in countless factories and plants is contributing to dangerously filthy air in the country, which already has many of the world's most polluted cities. India's energy-hungry industries like petcoke because it's cheaper and burns hotter than coal; they also defend their use by saying they're recycling a waste that's being produced anyway. (AP Photo)

Several measures were applied to control the pollution level in the national capital. In this photo a firefighter sprays water on trees as part of the anti-pollution measures to improve the air quality of the capital, at Raisina Road in New Delhi. (PTI Photo)
