Your train journey is set to become delightful with breathtaking views of the gorgeous landscapes of the Western Ghats and/or the Konkan region. Indian Railways is all set to introduce a Vistadome 'glass ceiling' coach on Central Railways. The coach also has large glass windows that are 2200*1250 mm wide. The windows come equipped with roller blinds. According to Indian Railways, Vistadome coaches provide passengers 'Europe-like' journey experience. We take a look at the Vistadome 'glass ceiling' coach and the delights that it offers.

The 'Make in India' Vistamdome coaches are the first of their kind to be introduced on Indian Railways. Earlier, a Vistadome coach was introduced on the Araku Valley route and soon Kashmir Valley will get a 'glass ceiling' coach as well. The Vistadome coaches have been manufactured by Chennai's ICF at a cost of Rs 3.38 crore each.

The roof of the coach has double glass windows that are controlled electronically through a central system. The ceiling 'windows' can be turned opaque as and when required.

The executive AC coach has a seating capacity of 40 people with a very special feature of rotating chairs! Yes, the twin seats can be rotated for better views from the ceiling.

The seats are similar to the ones that are offered on Shatabdi trains. They have a reclining system and the foot rest is also rotating.

The coach has 12 passenger information and entertainment system with LCD screens. The coach is equipped with modular AC ducting and has a 'sleek' roof mounted package unit for air conditioning.

There is a huge observation window in the lounge area of the coach that offers a panoramic view. The coach also has a wide side door for physically challenged persons.

The coach also has a mini pantry and service station with aircraft-type food trolley, mini refrigerator, 1 juicer grinder racks for cutlery and crockery.

The modular toilets by Indian Railways have ceramic tiles and are definite leg up to the ones found in most trains.

The coach boasts of features such as LED lights, multi-tier luggage rack near the doorway and electrically operated automatic sliding doors for compartment entry.

Sources in Indian Railways told FE Online that the Mumbai-Goa stretch is being considered as it offers scenic views of Western Ghats, but nothing has been finalised yet. The Konkan region is also being considered as a possible route on which the Vistadome coach may ply.

Talking to FE Online about the move to promote tourism with the help of Vistadome coaches, Anil Saxena, Spokesperson of Indian Railways, said, "The Araku Valley Vistadome coach has acquired a reasonable patronage and these are steps by Railways to promote tourism. We hope to continue offering such delightful experiences in the future as well."
