At least eight people were killed due to electrocution after torrential overnight rainfall — among the heaviest in nearly four decades — left Kolkata paralysed on Tuesday. The extreme downpour disrupted air, rail, and road transport, forced the closure of educational institutions, and prompted the state government to declare Puja holidays two days in advance. The city recorded 251.4 mm of rain in less than 24 hours, the highest since 1986 and the sixth-highest single-day rainfall in the last 137 years. Only the deluges of 369.6 mm in 1978, 253 mm in 1888, and 259.5 mm in 1986 were higher.
