The U.S. Chamber of Commerce sued the city of Seattle on Thursday over an ordinance that allows drivers of ride-hailing apps Uber and Lyft to unionize, saying it violates federal antitrust laws. Seattle last year became the first U.S. city to pass a law giving drivers for companies such as Uber and Lyft, as well as taxi and for-hire drivers, the right to collectively negotiate on pay and working conditions. The Delhi High Court today refused to hear Vijay Mallya's plea against State Bank of India's decision to name him a "wilful defaulter" and said he can approach an appropriate forum. Sensing the mood of the court, Mallya's counsel requested Justice Rajiv Sahai Endlaw to allow them to withdraw their petition including one filed by United Breweries Holdings (UBHL), which is also owned by the businessman. As many as 127 passengers onboard a Jet Airways plane from New Delhi had a close shave after its main landing gear collapsed when it landed here. All the passengers deplaned safely, Jet Airways said in a statement. The incident resulted in the blocking of the main runway, forcing Mumbai authorities to shift flight operations to the secondary runway, sources said. (Reuters)

Despite the ongoing jewellers'strike to protest against reimposition of 1 per cent excise duty on gold and diamond jewellery, CBEC today said the sector contributes to generation of black money and needs to be brought under the tax ambit. "We have brought jewellery (sector) into the tax net. This is the levy which we had attempted two years ago and withdrawn… This is the sector which you will agree with me needs to be brought into tax needs," Chairman of the Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC), Najib Shah today said at an event organised by industry body Assocham. Moody’s lowers rating of Anil Ambani’s RCom: Moody’s Investors Service has changed the outlook of Reliance Communications (RCom) to negative from stable as there are persistent delays in the company’s sale of non-core assets. Moody’s said the negative outlook reflects its view that ongoing delays in RCom’s rollout of the deleveraging plans will keep the operator’s financial and credit profile strained over the near term. Future Consumer Enterprise (FCEL) is set to forge distribution alliances with retailers to sell a range of food and non-food products, and targets a revenue of Rs 4,000 crore in 2016-17, Future Group head Kishore Biyani said today. An Air India flight to Chicago from Hyderabad via Delhi was delayed by over 18 hours due to a technical glitch in the aircraft, causing inconvenience to around 300 passengers, who had to spend more time on ground than they would have taken to fly to their destination. The Air India plane, a Boeing 777-200ER, operating as flight (AI-126), had arrived at IGI airport here from Hyderabad last evening and was to operate as flight number AI-127 to Chicago. (Reuters)

With the workers' strike at Tata Nano plant at Sanand entering the 10th day today, the Gujarat labour department declared it as illegal and referred the matter to the industrial tribunal here for resolution. "We issued the order declaring the strike illegal under the Prohibition of Industrial Disputes Act to both management and the union leader. If the workers continue the strike, we can issue show-cause notice and lodge a criminal case against them," said assistant labour commissioner M S Patel. (Reuters)

Hundreds of farmers blocked the road leading to the airport and disrupted traffic as they sought solution to their water woes in two parched districts, prompting police to resort to baton charge. The farmers from Chikkaballapur and Kolar districts were enraged as police tried to prevent their entry into the city on the airport road with a ban on entry of tractors and lorry and prohibitory orders in place. Disapproving the manner in which officers of Directorate of Central Excise arrested an official of online travel portal makemytrip.com for alleged evasion of service tax of about Rs 67.44 crore, Delhi High Court today said such conduct cannot be "countenanced". "In how many cases of massive defaulters have you made arrests? This (conduct of excise department) will not be countenanced on our watch. We cannot countenance that you arrest without issuing a show cause or demand notice or without informing the person in writing..," a bench of justices S Muralidhar and Vibhu Bakhru said.
