Chennai city and suburbs today started picking up crumbs of life with flood waters receding in several areas but lakhs of people continued to suffer from lack of supply of essentials including water, power, milk and food items. Intermittent rains in the city in areas like Kodambakkam, T. Nagar, Adyar and Kotturpuram and suburban Tambaram today threatened to revive the ghost of flooding again but the weatherman has forecast only light rains for Chennai in the next 24 hours. Heavy to very heavy rains have been forecast for south coastal and interior districts and Puducherry.

The Indian rupee continued to decline against the American currency for the third consecutive day by slipping another 4 paise to close at 1-week low of 66.69 per dollar after touching more than two-year low of 67.01 during the intra-day deals.

Gold got back some of its sheen after two days of weakness by rising Rs 210 to Rs 25,560 per 10 grams at the bullion market today, tracking a firm trend overseas amid buying by jewellers for the ongoing wedding season. Silver followed suit and recovered Rs 400 to Rs 34,100 per kg on higher offtake by industrial units and coin makers.

Indian shares ended lower for the third straight session as the benchmark BSE Sensex tumbled over 248 points today to settle at a two-week low of 25,638.11, tracking a global rout after the ECB stimulus fell short of expectations. The rupee woes against the dollar continued as it fell to 67.01, a two-year low, which along with sustained capital outflows kept investors on the edge.

The broader NSE Nifty cracked below yet another crucial 7,800-mark by falling 82.25 points, or 1.05 per cent, to close at 7,781.90. It moved between 7,775.70 and 7,821.40 intra-day. For the week, the Sensex and the Nifty retreated 490.09 points, or 1.87 per cent, and 160.80 points, or 2.02 per cent, respectively.
