  Pakistan on Tuesday, August 14, celebrated their 72nd Independence Day which marks the transfer of power by last British viceroy to the new government in Karachi. Pakistan gained independence when the British left India and split the subcontinent in 1947.

  The day-long festivities began with special prayers in mosques and the hoisting of the national flag at all important public buildings in the country. All public buildings across the country have been decorated with bunting and lights. (AP)

  To mark the day, a 31-gun salute was held in Islamabad, followed by 21-gun salutes in all four provincial capitals. (AP)
