During the Karwa Chauth festival on November 1 this year, the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT), a traders’ organization, has projected that the festive season sales are likely to surpass Rs 15,000 crore. Leading up to the celebration, business activities in Delhi alone are anticipated to reach approximately Rs 1,500 crore. In a statement, CAIT President B C Bhartia and Secretary General Praveen Khandelwal mentioned that a wide range of items, including jewelry, clothing, cosmetics, sarees, puja calendars, and various puja materials such as Karwa (earthen pot), sieve, lamp, flower sticks, and other related items, will be in high demand during this period.
The roots of Karwa Chauth festival can be traced to the legend of Karva Devi, whose husband was attacked by a crocodile, and Savitri, who beseeched Lord Yama, the god of death, to bring back their husbands’ souls.
