Banan’s journey began in Udupi, Karnataka, where he grew up in an ordinary family. At the tender age of 13, he took a bold step, leaving home with only a handful of money borrowed from his father’s pocket after a failed school exam. His destination was Mumbai, where he embarked on a journey filled with uncertainties.
In 1967, he found himself washing utensils at a restaurant for a meagre salary of Rs 18 per month, laying the foundation for his future endeavours.
In 1974, Banan’s journey led him to Delhi, where he assumed management of a canteen. Determined to carve his path, he ventured into entrepreneurship and established his restaurant, Sagar, in 1986. Despite humble beginnings, Sagar’s delectable South Indian cuisine quickly gained popularity, attracting a loyal clientele and paving the way for expansion. This marked the inception of “Sagar-Ratna,” with a successful branch in Lodhi Market, Delhi, further solidifying Banan’s foothold in the culinary landscape.
Despite premium pricing, Sagar Ratna’s reputation for quality and flavour continued to draw patrons, propelling Banan’s vision to greater heights. Today, Sagar Ratna stands as a beacon of success, with international outlets in countries like Canada, Singapore, and Bangkok, boasting an impressive annual turnover exceeding Rs 300 crore.
In addition to Sagar Ratna, Banan diversified his ventures by founding the Swagat restaurant chain in 2001, further expanding his culinary empire. Banan’s remarkable achievements have earned him the moniker “Dosa King of the North,” symbolizing his dominance in the culinary realm. With nearly 100 restaurants worldwide, he exemplifies the epitome of entrepreneurial success, showcasing the power of resilience and hard work in the face of adversity.
