Winter is a season that demands extra attention to self-care, particularly for your hands and feet. By incorporating a few simple practices into your routine, you can prevent dryness, discomfort, and more serious skin issues.

According to Shaily Mehrotra, CEO and Co-founder, Fixderma India Pvt Ltd, it is very easy to overlook the areas of our body most vulnerable to the harsh conditions—our hands and feet. While we often focus on layering up with cozy jackets and sweaters, these parts of our body take the brunt of the cold, and we often neglect them.

“The reality is, hands and feet are more prone to dryness and cracking during the winter months, especially since they lack the oil glands that other parts of the body have, making them naturally more susceptible to harsh conditions. This makes it essential to focus on these exposed parts of the body,” Mehrotra told Financial Express.com.

Here are some essential tips to keep hands and feet nourished and protected during the winter season:

Moisturize Regularly:

Apply a rich, nourishing cream or balm designed specifically for hands and feet. Look for moisturizers with ingredients like shea butter, glycerin, or hyaluronic acid. The best time to apply is right after a shower or after washing your hands and feet, when your skin is still slightly damp. This ensures to lock in moisture and ensure protection against the cold for long periods of time.

Wear Protective Gear:

Don’t underestimate the power of warm socks and gloves. It is always a good measure to put a physical barrier from the external environment. Choose gloves that are soft yet offer protection from the cold, and opt for thermal socks made from moisture-wicking materials to keep your feet warm and dry. These not only help stay warm but also help avoid loss of moisture.

Avoid Hot Water:

As tempting as it may be, hot showers can strip your skin of its natural oils. Stick to lukewarm water to avoid drying out your skin, and help it retain moisture naturally. Adding a gentle cleanser is always a good idea as that will further help the skin to stay hydrated.

Exfoliate Gently:

Exfoliation is key to removing dead skin and allowing moisturizers to work their magic. Gently exfoliate your hands and feet once or twice a week with mild scrubs. Excessively scrubbing with harsh agents can also be harmful.

Stay Hydrated:

Hydration starts from within. Drink water consistently throughout the day to keep your skin hydrated. Herbal teas are also a great choice to stay warm while nourishing your skin.

Treat Cracks and Calluses Promptly:

If you notice cracks or calluses, give them immediate attention. Use healing ointments, thick medicated moisturisers, consider wearing cotton gloves or socks overnight to help accelerate the healing process.

“Winter requires extra care for your hands and feet, and by incorporating these simple practices into your routine, you can ensure they stay healthy, comfortable, and protected throughout the season,” Mehrotra said.
