In a significant boost to religious tourism, the Uttarakhand Tourism Department has launched a comprehensive tourist package that allows pilgrims to visit the sacred Kailash peak from the Old Lipulekh pass, now accessible within Indian territory. This development not only enhances the spiritual journey for devotees of Lord Shiva but also promises to invigorate the local economy through increased tourism.

Previously, pilgrims had to travel to the Tibet Autonomous Region to catch a glimpse of the revered Kailash peak. However, the new route provides a more convenient and enriching experience for spiritual seekers. The first group of five pilgrims recently embarked on this journey, trekking 2.5 kilometres from Gunji camp to the Old Lipulekh pass, where they witnessed the breathtaking view of Kailash peak.

Tourist package details

To facilitate this pilgrimage experience, the new tourist package includes:

– Helicopter Rides: Pilgrims can enjoy a scenic helicopter ride from Pithoragarh to Gunji, offering a thrilling aerial perspective of the stunning landscapes that define Uttarakhand.

– Accommodation: The package includes comfortable lodging at Kumaon Mandal Vikas Nigam (KMVN) facilities or local homestays, ensuring a cosy and welcoming stay for all visitors.

– Itinerary: Spanning four nights and five days, the tour allows ample time for pilgrims to engage in spiritual activities and visit other sacred sites, including Adi Kailash and Om Parvat.

– Cost: The entire package is priced at Rs 80,000 per tourist, inclusive of GST. Bookings can easily be made through the KMVN website.

This initiative comes at a crucial time, as the traditional Kailash Mansarovar Yatra through the Tibet Autonomous Region has been suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The successful organisation of this new route highlights the state government’s commitment to enhancing religious tourism and ensuring a memorable experience for devotees.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami commended the collaborative efforts that made this pilgrimage possible, emphasising the importance of promoting tourism in the region. “This initiative not only caters to the spiritual needs of our pilgrims but also contributes to the economic development of Uttarakhand,” he stated.

The inaugural viewing of the sacred Kailash peak from the Old Lipulekh pass served as a poignant reminder of the rich spiritual heritage of the region. For the pilgrims, witnessing the peak was an emotionally overwhelming experience, with many shedding tears of joy as they felt a deep connection to Lord Shiva.

As the new route to Kailash peak gains popularity, it is expected to draw more devotees and adventure seekers, further enriching the spiritual and cultural landscape of Uttarakhand. With the combination of breathtaking views, helicopter rides and well-structured itineraries, this initiative promises a transformative experience for all who seek the blessings of Lord Shiva.
