Spigen wants Apple to take notes from Samsung. The popular mobile case and accessory maker took to X (formerly Twitter) to call out Apple for using 60Hz panels in iPhones and nudged the company to go higher, like all Samsung Galaxy S25 series phones. The post was simple but timed strategically dropping around the time of Galaxy Unpacked January 2025 as Samsung released the Galaxy S25, S25 Plus, and S25 Ultra.

The refresh rate determines how many times a screen refreshes per second. A higher number (90/120/144Hz) can entail smoother animations, less blur when scrolling, and an overall improved user experience, subject to how well it is optimised. Apple introduced 120Hz “ProMotion” displays with the iPhone 13 Pro, supporting an adaptive refresh rate from 10Hz to 120Hz. All pro iPhones have had this since then. But for some curious reason, Apple has kept it a pro-exclusive. And so, the regular iPhones, including the latest iPhone 16, still have a 60Hz display.
Cut to Android, 120Hz is somewhat of a standard today and is available is readily regardless of whether it is a budget phone or top tier. If not, 90Hz is dead given in most. But 60Hz is slowly phasing out. Apple still finds some merit in that, it seems, and for most people, probably it doesn’t even matter. But, from a pure specs point of view, Android has a big leg-up when it comes to display technology. Samsung is among the best in the business. The Galaxy S25 series pushing things even further, with the Galaxy S25 Ultra bringing “the industry’s first scratch-resistant, anti-reflective glass ceramic cover material for mobile devices.”
Spigen’s call to action coincides with the launch of their new Qi2-compatible cases for the Galaxy S25 series. Samsung’s latest flagships are adopting the Qi2 wireless charging standard, albeit with a catch. Full Qi2 compatibility requires a specialised case, like those offered by Spigen. Otherwise, the Galaxy S25 series support the more standard Qi wireless charging out of the box supporting a maximum speed of 15W.
