In response to the criticism, Whoop has announced that it will uphold its commitment to offer a free upgrade—but only for members who have more than 12 months remaining on their current subscription.

“We’re updating our upgrade eligibility to ensure it reflects both our values and your expectations. We heard your feedback, especially from those of you with more than 12 months remaining on your membership,” Whoop tweeted.

Members with over 12 months left on their subscription are now eligible to receive the Whoop 5.0 at no extra cost. If you were charged an upgrade fee despite meeting this requirement, the company will issue a refund.

“If you have less than 12 months remaining, you can extend your membership to receive an upgrade at no additional cost – or pay a one-time upgrade fee to get the latest hardware without extending your membership,” it adds. “You can also choose to renew your subscription when it is up, and you’ll be eligible to upgrade to Whoop 5.0 at that time for free.”

To recall, Whoop recently introduced two new wearable devices—Whoop 5.0 and Whoop MG—boasting upgraded hardware, enhanced battery life, and expanded health tracking capabilities through the app. These devices are built for continuous, around-the-clock wear.

The latest models offer an impressive battery life of up to 14 days, significantly surpassing the previous 4.0 version, which typically lasted four to five days.
According to the company, the new wearables are also 7% more compact and feature a processor that’s 60% more powerful than the earlier model.

“We’ve applied everything we’ve learned over the last ten years to create a platform that empowers our members to perform at their best and maintain peak health longer,” said Whoop CEO and founder Will Ahmed in a press statement.

This release represents the brand’s first significant update to its hardware since launching the Whoop 4.0 in 2021. Whoop says the new models provide deeper insights into how everyday choices influence a user’s health and performance over time.
