Sony has officially launched the PlayStation Portal in India, nearly nine months after its global debut. Priced at Rs 18,990, the PlayStation Portal is designed specifically for streaming games via Wi-Fi from a PlayStation 5, making it essential for users to already own Sony’s high-end console.
The PlayStation Portal hardware merges an eight-inch LCD with the familiar layout of a DualSense controller. This laminated screen offers a resolution of 1080p and a refresh rate of up to 60Hz. The device supports Wi-Fi 5 for seamless connectivity and is powered by a 4,370mAh non-removable battery, charged via USB-C. Additionally, it features stereo speakers and a 3.5mm headphone jack for a complete audio experience. Notably, it connects with Sony’s new PlayStation Link-enabled headphones for lossless audio, although it lacks Bluetooth connectivity.
One major limitation of the PlayStation Portal is that it does not support cloud streaming services such as Nvidia’s GeForce Now or even Sony’s own PlayStation Plus Premium subscription. Moreover, it cannot run any local applications, including popular streaming services like YouTube or Netflix. This means that the Portal’s functionality is strictly tied to streaming games directly from a PS5 over a home Wi-Fi network.
Sony describes the PlayStation Portal as a device that puts the PS5 game collection in the user’s hands, allowing them to play compatible games installed on their console without needing a TV. This handheld device essentially extends the gaming experience of the PS5, offering flexibility for users who want to play away from their main gaming setup.
For those interested in purchasing the PlayStation Portal, it will be available from August 3, 2024, across various retail platforms in India, including Sony Centres, Amazon, Flipkart, Croma, Reliance, Vijay Sales, and Blinkit.
The PlayStation Portal offers a unique proposition for PS5 owners, combining the convenience of a handheld device with the power of a home console. Despite its limitations, it provides a dedicated remote play experience that could appeal to gamers looking for more flexibility in how they enjoy their PS5 library. Question is, at what cost.
