Samsung Galaxy Unpacked 2024 is right around the corner. And ahead of the grand Galaxy S24 series unveiling on January 17, Samsung’s plans to beat Apple have leaked online. We already know that the South Korean major is taking cues from Google and gearing a bunch of Generative AI assistive features for the upcoming Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24 Plus, and Galaxy S24 Ultra, and now, a new report hints at one more area where Samsung might copy Mountain View— software updates.

Samsung Galaxy S24 series to receive longer software updates: Report

Android Headlines has managed to unearth a bunch of what appears to be promotional materials of the Galaxy S24 series and in one of the renders, Samsung is allegedly quoted to confirm that the Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24 Plus, and Galaxy S24 Ultra, will receive up to seven years of software updates. If you’ve been keeping track, you’ll know, this is similar to what Google gives on its Pixel 8 series devices.

Samsung currently gives up to four years of software support and so if at all it chooses to update the policy, it will not only mean extended support for Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24 Plus, and Galaxy S24 Ultra users, it might also push other brands to up their software game. Of course, this also means that Samsung will beat Apple as the iPhone maker currently offers up to five years of support.

It remains to be seen if Samsung will extend this strategy to other devices, like last year’s Galaxy S23 series and Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Flip 5. Google’s 7-year support covers only the Pixel 8 series devices that includes the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro.

Samsung Galaxy S24 series to get Generative AI features

Previously, Samsung has been reported to be prepping a Gen AI-based feature called “Generative Edit” which seems heavily inspired from Google’s Magic Eraser function. Like Magic Eraser, Samsung’s Generative Edit, too, will apparently allow users to move and remove objects as well as fill in empty spaces in photos using AI. Like Google, Samsung is also expected to require Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24 Plus, Galaxy S24 Ultra users to have a Samsung account log in and an internet connection for it to work.

Adding on to that, promo renders shared in the Android Headlines report also suggest some of Samsung’s Galaxy S24 series Gen AI features might not be free to use forever. One of the renders purportedly mentions an “until at least 2025” window for some of these features beyond which Samsung might charge you to use them. We’ll see.

Samsung Galaxy S24 series expected hardware specs

Galaxy AI is going to be the big showstopper at Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Unpacked event while its hardware choices could be more incremental. The customary chip upgrade will see Samsung switching to the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3/Exynos 2400 obviously, but the rest of the specs are mostly expected to be do-overs from last year.

Another area where Samsung is expected to refresh things is in the build materials. The top-tier Galaxy S24 Ultra is tipped to get a Titanium frame, much like the new iPhone 15 Pro series
