Qualcomm has announced its next-generation flagship mobile processor, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. The new chip is built on TSMC’s 4nm process and features a number of significant upgrades over its predecessor, including a focus on generative AI and power savings.
One of the biggest highlights of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 is its new Hexagon NPU, which is designed specifically for generative AI workloads. Qualcomm says that the new NPU is up to 98% faster than the previous generation, and it also features a number of other improvements, such as a 40% improved performance-per-watt for sustained AI inferencing.
“Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 infuses high-performance AI across the entire system to deliver premium-level performance and extraordinary experiences to consumers. This platform unlocks a new era of generative AI enabling users to generate unique content, help with productivity, and other breakthrough use cases.” said Chris Patrick, senior vice president and general manager of mobile handsets, Qualcomm Technologies, while commenting on the launch.

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 supports multi-modal generative AI models, including popular large language models (LLM), language vision models (LVM), and transformer network-based automatic speech recognition (ASR) up to 10B parameters—solely on-device.
The latest processor comes with a 30% performance and 20% power efficiency boost facilitated by the Kryo CPU and Adreno GPU. The CPU is 30% faster and 20% more power-efficient. The GPU is 25% better in terms of performance and efficiency and supports ray tracing for improved graphics.
The device with Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 have camera system boasting intelligent features for photo and video editing. It can optimise various aspects of your photos in real-time, even in low light conditions. It also supports advanced features like video object erasing and high-quality HDR photo capture.
Further, the platform is designed for high-performance gaming with hardware-accelerated ray tracing, smooth graphics, and support for up to 240 FPS on 240 Hz displays. It can even upscale game scenes to 8K for external displays.
The Snapdragon X75 Modem-RF System inside provides high speed 5G and improved performance.
The latest processor will be adopted by for flagship devices by global OEMs and smartphone brands including Samsung, ASUS, Honor, iQOO, MEIZU, NIO, Nubia, OnePlus, OPPO, realme, Redmi, RedMagic, Sony, vivo, Xiaomi, and ZTE. The first smartphone with Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 is expected to arrive in the coming weeks.
