India has started offering e-Passports, a new type of passport that people can now apply for across the country. These were first introduced on April 1, 2024, through a pilot program by the Ministry of External Affairs. Right now, only a few passport offices can issue them, but more centres will be added soon. e-Passports look similar to regular ones but have a small gold-colored emblem below the title on the front cover. This mark helps tell them apart. The new passports aim to improve security and speed up immigration checks at airports.
What is an e-Passport in India?
An e-Passport in India is an upgraded version of the traditional passport, integrating both physical and digital features. It comes with an embedded Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) chip and an antenna, which securely hold personal information along with biometric details such as fingerprints and a digital photograph.
On the outside, it can be recognised by a small gold symbol printed on the front cover, just beneath the passport title.
It’s worth noting that the e-Passport is not a replacement for the standard passport but rather an advanced version aimed at strengthening security, increasing transparency, and making the process of international travel smoother and more efficient.
The fee for getting a new e-passport in India is Rs. 1,500 for a 36-page booklet and Rs. 2,000 for a 60-page booklet under the normal application process. Tatkal charges are extra and not inclusive.
