News comes in that Meta is rolling out a new “Communities” feature on Messenger, as reported by TechCrunch.
The feature is expected to be designed to help organizations, schools and other private groups communicate in a more structured and organised way. However, earlier Meta had already introduced Communities on WhatsApp back in 2022.
What’s the update?
Reportedly, Meta’s ‘Communities’ compiles multiple group chats into one place. Each Community features has a dedicated “Home” space where admins can share updates and announcements. Meta explained that its ‘Communities,’ can hold up to 5,000 people, where everyone can join a community through shareable invites.
“The feature can be used to create a dedicated space for things like organizations, schools, PTAs and neighborhoods,” Meta explained to TechCrunch. It looks like ‘Communities’ can also be used to create a dedicated space for connecting with friends with common interests.
Experts suggest that this might help in improving communication skills, especially for education and corporate sectors. Also, current social media creators can use this as a platform for exchanging ideas.
What’s next?
Looks like Meta plans to expand Messenger’s functionality and differentiate it from other messaging services, such as iMessage. Meta’s ‘Communities’ can help people connect on a broader level.
“Communities on Messenger are designed for more public conversations when compared to Facebook groups. For instance, the company notes that all current and future members of a Community can see chat content,” Meta highlighted on its official page.
Critics argued that ‘Communities’ works similarly to Communities on WhatsApp. However, Meta denied by saying that Messenger Communities will be connected to Facebook’s social graph. On the other hand, WhatsApp will require you to have someone’s phone number to invite them in its ‘Communities.’
