Mark Zuckerberg is keen to establish Meta as the master in the smart glasses segment. After the popular Ray Ban Meta, Zuckerberg is now ready to unveil another smart glass model designed in collaboration with Oakley. For those who need context, Oakley is a sports eyewear brand under the EssilorLuxottica umbrella – the same company that owns Ray Ban. The partnership, which was teased across social media, points to a Ray Ban Meta-like product with a design that echoes more with Oakley’s range.
While Meta and Oakley are yet to reveal the name of the smart glasses, the partnership has spawned a new dedicated Instagram page. The specifics of the new Oakley-branded glasses remain under wraps but rumours suggest they might be based on Oakley’s Sphaera model, potentially targeting athletes and cyclists. It is also said that the Oakley version could differ from the existing Ray-Ban Meta glasses with a centrally located camera. This camera positioning could enhance the hands-free action capture view.
Meta and Oakley smart glasses: Will it be a Ray Ban Meta clone?
This collaboration could potentially pave the way for Oakley and Meta to venture into the action camera territory – an area dominated by GoPro and Insta360. A superior imaging system with nicer stabilisation could make the footage quality better than the Ray Ban Meta, suggests rumours.
Similar to the Ray-Ban Meta, the Oakley Meta glasses could include built-in cameras for photos and videos, integrated speakers for audio, and Meta AI access for voice commands and information retrieval.
With June 20 designated as the launch date, it remains to be seen whether Meta and Oakley go for a premium-than-Ray Ban Meta pricing strategy.
