Apple’s upcoming iPhone 16 series may not bring significant enough changes to entice users to upgrade from their current models, according to renowned tech journalist Mark Gurman’s latest Power On newsletter. It suggests that the upcoming iPhone 16 may not be very different from its predecessor and lack any groundbreaking innovations.

Gurman writes that the marketing point for iPhone 16 could be the inclusion of Apple Intelligence which will also come on the iPhone 15 Pro. The non-Pro models of iPhone 16 will come with an Action button which was already seen on iPhone 15’s high-end models. However, this action button may not play a significant role considering Apple is bringing a more customisable Control Center and lock screen with the iOS 18.

Talking about the expected updates, the new iPhone Pros may feature a new camera control on the right side which will work like a DSLR camera button. A light press will focus the camera, and a firm press will take pictures.

Another update, likely exclusive to the Pro models, will be slightly larger screens. The regular Pro will grow from 6.1 to 6.3 inches, while the Pro Max will increase from 6.7 to nearly 6.9 inches. There will be new colour options. The Pro will get new colours, replacing blue and bringing back the popular rose gold. All models will be equipped with the new A18 chip and 8 gigabytes of memory, which is essential for Apple’s advanced features.

According to Gurman, for those with older iPhones, these updates are nice but not essential. These incremental upgrades may not be compelling enough for existing iPhone users to justify the cost of a new device. Apple’s loyal customer base has come to expect significant leaps in technology with each new iPhone generation, and this year’s models might not meet those expectations.

Gurman predicts that the next year’s lineup promises to be much more exciting than this year’s. The new iPhone SE, expected in early 2025, is said to bring a fresh design with an OLED screen and Apple Intelligence, potentially making it a hot seller if priced around $500.
