Google Maps has finally introduced a new feature in India that enables you to measure your fuel consumption with every completed destination as per your engine. This feature is called ‘save fuel’ which was originally available to the US, Canada, and Europe initially. It’s time to save those big holes in your pocket as you learn more about this feature.
In September 2022, Google Maps launched the ‘save fuel’ option that helped in giving an estimated fuel or energy efficiency for various routes based on your vehicle engine along with real-time traffic and road conditions for you to choose the best option.
Steps to enable ‘save fuel’ feature
- To activate the feature, follow the steps below:
- Launch Google Maps on your smartphone.
- Select your profile photo or initials.
- Navigate to Settings and then to Navigation.
- Scroll down to the “Route options” section.
- To enable eco-friendly routing, select Prefer fuel-efficient routes.
- Tap Engine type to select your engine type.
- Choose your engine type.
Feature explained
When selecting your vehicle’s engine type, consider whether it has an internal combustion engine. If it does, choose between Petrol or Diesel. For hybrid or plug-in hybrid vehicles that primarily use fuel, select Hybrid. Alternatively, if your vehicle is an EV or a plug-in hybrid that relies mostly on electricity, choose Electric.
Google highlights that the most fuel-efficient route suggestion can vary depending on the engine type. For instance, diesel vehicles tend to exhibit their greatest fuel economy advantage during highway driving. On the contrary, hybrid and electric vehicles tend to demonstrate increasing efficiency in stop-and-go city driving and hilly terrains. These environments allow them to make extensive use of and benefit from regenerative braking, contributing to improved fuel efficiency.
