If you are using Google Chrome on a dated MacBook running macOS Big Sur, Google has a warning for you. Google is ditching support for Chrome browser on the older macOS Big Sur and that means it is time to let go of your trusty old laptop.
The tech giant has announced that Chrome version 138 will be the final release to support macOS 11, commonly known as macOS Big Sur. This decision forces a significant change for millions of MacBook users globally.
No new Chrome updates for old MacBook users
MacBooks still operating on macOS Big Sur will no longer receive essential Chrome updates beyond version 138. This includes not only new features and performance enhancements but vital security patches. Without these regular security updates and patches, users on macOS Big Sur will become increasingly vulnerable to online threats, malware, and other forms of cyberattacks while using Google Chrome.
Google’s decision to discontinue support for macOS 11 Big Sur follows Apple’s own decision to end support for the old OS. Apple has already officially discontinued support for macOS Big Sur. Hence, Google is unable to guarantee the integrity and security of its Chrome browser when running on an officially unsupported operating system.
What should macOS 11 users do
To maintain a secure browsing experience on Google Chrome, users are urged to update their MacBooks to at least macOS 12 Monterey or a newer version. Since most of these machines might be outdated, it makes a lot more sense to upgrade to the latest version of MacBook. A current-gen MacBook Air or MacBook Pro with the M4 generation of processors will guarantee years of peace of mind, as far as secure browsing and computing is concerned.
Additionally, there are several great deals available on older MacBook models with the M2 chip and even the M1 chip. While the prices on these machines are low, MacBooks on these older processors may offer a limited lifeline. The MacBook Air M2 is available with a much more affordable price tag, thus making it easy to enter the modern Mac ecosystem.
Additionally, users can opt to jump to the other side with Windows 11 laptops, which come with updated support for Google Chrome and an integrated Copilot AI assistant.
